As just announced on the ICANN blog, ICANN COO Doug Brent will be stepping down from his job at the end of July 2010. He has been with ICANN the beginning of 2007. The non profit has started the recruiting process for a successor.

He explains his decision as follows:

While my engagement in the work of ICANN has made this a difficult decision, the reasons I am leaving are simple. I accepted my role with ICANN in December 2006 with the expectation that I’d commute the 300 miles to Los Angeles four days a week. I did that for twenty months, after which I chose to relocate to Los Angeles – both to do a better job for ICANN, and to see my wife of 27 years every once and a while :-) . After relocating for what will be more than two years, and much family discussion, we’ve determined that our life is not in Los Angeles.

Paul Stahura launched eNom in 1997 from an ISDN line in his garage in Redmond Washington. The company now is part of Demand Media and Paul was a CSO as well as a member of the board. After 12 years, he is now leaving the company. Here is what he writes on Facebook:

After much thought, and 12 years after founding eNom, I’ve decided to join the ranks of eNom alumni. Demand Media, the company I sold eNom to nearly four years ago, is a great company and will be even greater in the years to come. Truly “going big”… Huge. The board, the management team, the employees – everyone – our customers, our services, are top notch. Demand is still in the first innings, but its time for me to move on. I look forward to working with Demand in the future, just not as an employee, and to keeping in touch with you all. Very best of luck to everyone at eNom and Demand Media! So long for now, Paul

DNN wishes Paul all the best for his future plans.

Nora Nanayakkara

Nominet announced last week that three new members - Clive Grace, Nora Nanayakkara, and Jonathan Robinson - were added to the board following an electoral vote.

Nora Nanayakkara is a notable member, having served as Sedo’s Business Development Director since November 2007 as well as being an elected member of Nominet’s Policy Advisory Body (PAB) since June 2008.

Clive Grace has served on a Corporate Governance Audit Committee for the Welsh Assembly Government and has been a member of numerous boards and councils since 1998 when she first chaired the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives.

Jonathan Robinson, the Chief Operating Officer of Netnames, has previously served as a Deputy Chairman on the Internet Council of Registrars (CORE) as well as the Director for NetBenefit. He also currently serves on the Board of Director for Afilias.

Nanayakkara has pledged to help Nominet by focusing on developing a strategy that reflects the realities of the .uk namespace, providing the board with rounded exposure to the wider stakeholder community, and implementing the governance changes needed to ensure that the .uk namespace remains a self-regulated hub for Britain’s online community. For more on Nanayakkara, check out her website at Nanayakkara.co.uk.

In total 455 members voted representing 16.41% of the electorate and 5,754,949 votes were cast which fulfills 63.90% of the possible number of votes.

danDan Warner, one of the most public faces of Dark Blue Sea has left  his position as COO of DBS (parent company of Fabulous.com).  Warner had been with DBS  for over 7 years.

Warner, probably best known for his in-depth data analysis and his leadership role at Fabulous.com, has been a featured speaker at many domain industry conferences.  More recently, Warner and DBS introduced a new angle on the domain aftermarket with the Domain Distribution Network.

Dark Blue Sea announced key personnel changes just 2 months ago.  CEO Richard Moore is stepping back from that position on July 1 . Moore announced he would not be seeking to renew his contract but would stay on board as a 1/2 time executive director.  Dark Blue Sea CFO, Gregory Platz, will be taking over as CEO.

Warner told DNN, “DBS was a good company to work for and I think they are still Fabulous.  It was just time for me to do something new. I’m focusing on projects of growth, development and innovation with active interests and roles in the domain channel. I’m diversifying into more active “hands on” development projects, and as a free agent I can consult and develop just about anything.”

We were happy to hear that Warner planned to stay involved in the domain space. Rumor has it that he will be actively blogging at DanWarner.com in the coming weeks.  We hope to have him as a guest contributor to DNN in the future.

You can now contact Dan Warner at Dan@DanWarner.com and +61 414 789 50

Dark Blue SeaApril 1st is always a day full of fun at DNN.com, but we were disappointed to read elsewhere about news at DomainNameWire which turned out not to be part of an April Fool’s joke.  As per a company press release (PDF), Dark Blue Sea CEO Richard Moore has announced that he will be stepping down as CEO.

Moore who has been CEO of DBS since 2001 will be stepping down from the position, but plans to stay involved with the company as an executive director on a 1/2 time basis.  His roles will be to focus on corporate strategy and development, investor relations and high level relationship management with major partners, customers and suppliers.

Dark Blue Sea CFO Gregory Platz will be taking over the CEO position effective July 1st, 2009. Platz has worked with the company for 1o years and in fact helped Dean Shannon found the company back in 1999. Moore told us that Platz “knows everything about the (DBS) domain business.”  Moore and the DBS board are very confident in Platz’s abilities to move the company forward.

We wish Richard and Dark Blue Sea the best during this transition.
