Geo-domain name association Associated Cities went through some rough times in 2009 . Reports of trouble with internal conflicts between board members and the direction of the group circulated as the 2009 Geo Domain expo neared. It seems now that the group is back on track and pushing forward with a new set of board members with Fred Mercaldo at the helm.
The association sent out an email earlier today outlining the changes to the group including a move to reorganize as a non-profit, a new membership structure, advertising programs, and a general vision for the group. The entire email can be read after the jump. It’s good to see this organization back on track and sending a clear message of where they are going.
Dear Members and Associates:
Here is a brief update of our recent progress at Associated Cities, Inc, and our immediate goals, vision and initiatives:
- Conversion from an LLC to a Non-Profit: We are pleased to announce that, while there still remains some unfinished business to clean up, the transformation to a pure NP corporation has been completed. This will ensure that this Association will be member-owned, and run by an membership-elected Board of Directors, as well as numerous membership-run committees populated with elected members who will assist and guide all our activities. There are a few liability issues that I believe we are 90% through the process of making them non-issues, and I anticipate they will all be dismissed within 30 days, giving us a green light to proceed aggressively with our plans to make Associated Cities the Number One resource for all GeoDomain owners worldwide.
- Membership Structure: We have a new Membership Committee in place that will soon announce our new membership rate structure. This new structure will greatly increase our Membership, and open the doors making it easier for all owners of developed City.coms to join. Owners of multipleCity.com properties will be given one rate for all of their domains; owners of small City.com properties will be given a full membership opportunity for as little as $295 per year, giving them full access to all of the benefits that most of us have shared for years. In the past, some owners of multipleCity.com properties usually only joined with one of their sites; there was minimal incentive for the owners to pay additional dues for subsequent memberships. Now, there will be a cap on membership dues that an owner of multiple sites would pay, and each and every one of the City.com‘s under an owners portfolio will join, giving our Association a robust membership roster that is sure to get the attention of National advertisers.
- Advertising Programs: As we build our network of pure City.com Members, our Executive Director Patrick Carleton will focus on securing lucrative advertising contracts, some regional, some national, some market specific…but all designed to bring much needed revenue to our City.comproperties. While this is not a new idea, and as many have said it was actually the original idea and goal of forming Associated Cities, for many reasons this has not become a program that benefited our Membership. This will change in the coming year. We plan on making it profitable for each and every one of us to be Associated Cities members. The potential addition of 100 PLUS new City.com properties to our membership will give us the strength and market share to attract the advertisers.
- GeoDomain Expo: We will form an Expo committee, and explore whether to keep all Expo responsibilities in-house, or appoint an outside organization to manage and organize our future Expos in return for a guaranteed revenue share. We also expect to announce our date and location of our Associated Cities GeoDomain Expo 2011 during September.
- Vision: Associated Cities needs to become an industry powerhouse, providing numerous programs and support, even legal, for the GeoDomain industry as a whole. From the members-only group email list that Associated Cities members have all used when we have a question or need advice, to our actually having formal representation in Washington to protect our interests…to having many lucrative advertising opportunities through our Association…to getting back to the basics of running a successful Expo that attracts not only all of our Membership, but also many new investors that would like to invest in our industry…our needs are many. In order to accomplish these initiatives, we need an active and robust Membership, along with the dollars necessary to accomplish these aggressive goals. I believe we are taking the proper steps necessary to achieve these results.
Please do not hesitate to contact me regarding any ideas or comments you may have. More to come, and thank you all for your patience during this time of transition.
Regards,
Fred Mercaldo
President

Advertisers will place a bid based on keywords or a list of categories and define their daily budget. The top bidder for the keyword receives the majority of the traffic, Bidders 2-5 will receive a percentage of the available traffic. Any bidder ranked sixth or lower will not receive any traffic. During the open beta only a small percentage of the available traffic will be made available to bid on. Any of the traffic will only be sent to the advertisers if they pay a higher price than the domains earns from the other parking providers.

We are pleased to announce the release of the Trellian AdNetwork, a direct navigation platform.
http://bid.trellian.com/The Trellian AdNetwork reaches over 200 million unique visitors each month and can deliver targeted, direct navigation traffic at a fraction of the cost.
Instead of paying per click, Trellian drives targeted traffic directly to your website. As there are no ads to view or to click on, there is no competition from organic search results or other advertisers. This means more traffic at a much lower cost.
The Trellian AdNetwork has the same traffic that you can currently buy from most major search engines and you can set up both keyword and category based campaigns.

Cryptographer Whitfield ‘Whit’ Diffie Joins ICANN as VP for Information Security & Cryptography
Whitfield Diffie from Wikipedia/en:Infosecpedia

As ICANN announced in a Press Release last night (PDF), the famous Cryptographer Whitefield ‘Whit’ Diffie has been hired by ICANN as Vice President for Information Security and Cryptography.
With Stanford University electrical engineering professor Martin Hellman, Diffie created and published (1976, “New Directions in Cryptography“, PDF) the Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange Protocol, which solved one of the fundamental problems of cryptography – key distribution. The process increased security through use of a secret key that is exchanged between parties prior to encryption.
He also is listed as an Distinguished Advisor to one of ICANN’s registry partners, Verisign. Verisign still lists him as being employed by Sun Microsystems – a position he left 6 months ago. DNN has contacted ICANN to find out if Diffie will still be serving as an Advisor to Verisign as well, as this could create a potential conflict of interest.
See the full press release after the jump. For more information on Diffie, we recommend the lecture of this excerpt about him from the book “Crypto” by Steven Levy.
Cryptography Legend Whit Diffie Joins the ICANN Team
Washington, DC. May 14, 2010 Pioneering cryptographer Whitfield ‘Whit’ Diffie has joined the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers as Vice President for Information Security and Cryptography.
ICANN CEO and President Rod Beckstrom expressed ICANN’s appreciation for Diffie’s exceptional background and the value he brings: “Whit Diffie brings an extraordinary intellect and immense professional achievements to ICANN, and his appointment reflects my strong commitment to improving ICANN’s technical security.”
Diffie will provide advice on general security matters related to ICANN’s mandate, and to ICANN in the design, development and implementation of security methods for ICANN-managed networks. He will oversee the continuous improvement and “best practices” process for information security and cryptography.
Globally recognized as a leader in public-key cryptography, encryption and network security, Diffie has a long and distinguished career as a leading force for innovative thought. He brings extensive experience in the design, development and implementation of security methods for networks.
With Stanford University electrical engineering professor Martin Hellman, Diffie produced the 1976 paper New Directions in Cryptography that laid the groundwork for solving one of the fundamental problems of cryptography – key distribution, a process to increase security through use of a secret key that is exchanged between parties prior to encryption.
Prior to coming to ICANN, Diffie served as Vice President, Fellow, and Chief Security Officer with Sun Microsystems, at which he had worked from 1991 to 2009. At Sun, Diffie focused on the most fundamental security problems facing modern communications and computing with emphasis on public policy as well as technology. Prior to joining Sun, Diffie was Manager of Secure Systems Research for Northern Telecom, where he played a key role in the design of Northern’s first packet security product and in developing the group that was later to become Entrust.
Diffie received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965 and a Doctorate in Technical Sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1992.
Diffie has received many awards throughout his career and was awarded a Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in 2008 by Royal Holloway College of the University of London. He received the Louis E. Levy Medal in 1997 from the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and the National Computer Systems Security Award, given jointly by NIST and NSA, in 1996. In 2000 he became a fellow of the Marconi Foundation.
With Susan Landau, he is the author of the 1998 book Privacy on the Line: the Politics of Wiretapping and Encryption.

Looking to invest in the domain space, but can’t find any good domains for sale? How about buying stock in a company that owns over 600,000 domains, but also monetizes millions of domains and has auctioned millions of dollars in domains? How about buying shares of Oversee.net ?
Up until recently you couldn’t buy these privately held shares, unless of course you wanted to dump millions of dollars in to the company, and even that could prove difficult. Thanks to new sites like SharesPost.com you now can buy shares of many private companies like Facebook, Twitter, and now Oversee.net.
SharesPost currently has a few blocks of Oversee.net stock for sale with a per share price of $7.35. The smallest block of shares available is 4,200 and priced at $30,870. You’ll need to sign-up to see the current offerings. (SharesPost requested that we take down the screen-shots of the current offerings)
The sale of these shares are subject to a few conditions such as first rights of refusal, a co-sale agreement and subject to company share-holders agreement. We’ve been told that some of these shares are shares of long-time employees who are looking to take a little money off the table.
Interestingly, SharesPost includes an “implied valuation” of Oversee based on the estimated number of fully-diluted shares and the listed share price. This number is just an estimate but it’s an interesting number. It puts the valuation of Oversee.net at over $1.1 Billion.
SharesPost lists the description of the company as:
Oversee.net is a domain parking and lead generation company founded in 2001. The company owns one of the largest portfolios of domain names in the world. The company’s unique optimized technology connects consumers and advertisers with highly relevant advertisements. Oversee also serves as a primary and secondary marketplace for domain names.
Oversee’s revenues are reportedly more than $200 million per year. Headquartered in Los Angeles, the company has reportedly not taken any outside funding.
It looks like SharesPost has some outdated info as the description states Oversee has not taken outside funding, when most know and it has been publicly reported that they received $150 million from Oak Hill Capital Partners. It’s worth noting that Oak Hill, founded by oil-man billionaire Robert Bass, has invested in some of the world’s largest companies. Maybe “going along for the ride” and owning shares along with one of America’s wealthiest men might be something worth looking into.
Something domainers who are heavily entrenched in the domain business may want to think about when owning these shares is that share owners often have information rights. Insight into a $200 million domain company backed by big private equity could be valuable to any domainer in terms of providing valuable insight into how to run their own business.
Regardless, Oversee is a behemoth company with a portfolio of over 600,000 domains and runs, among other ventures, domain name registrar Moniker.com, domain auction house SnapNames.com, the DomainFest Global conference. They are probably best known for creating the PPC company DomainSponsor.com in 2001. If you are a believer in the domain space and think that there is long-term value in a domain portfolio or simply find value in a company reportedly generating over $200 million a year in revenue, this could be a great investment opportunity.
If you want to invest in a company in the domain space, there are other opportunities and there may be more on the horizon. Marchex and LiveCurrent are traded but they haven’t weathered the recent market climate well. There’s also Tucows, which was recently mentioned on another blog as a “value investment”. Photon Group which now owns Dark Blue Sea is publicly trade in Australia . Demand Media is also exploring a public offering and even registrar giant Godaddy.com explored the IPO possibility a few years ago. Maybe even more shares of other private domain name companies will start popping up on sites like this.
For disclosure purposes, I do not own shares in any of the mentioned companies, but I am giving serious consideration to investing more in to the companies that dominate the domain space.

Enterprise DNS Provider Comwired Inc. Acquires DNS.com
Independently recognized as a top anycast DNS provider, Comwired Inc. adds top domain to its arsenal, bringing secure, location-based DNS service to a broader audience.
Louisville, KY, and Portland, Ore. (PRWEB) April 26, 2010 — Managed DNS provider, Comwired Inc. (http://www.comwired.com), announced Monday, April 26th, that it has acquired the industry’s category-defining domain name DNS.com in a private transaction and is launching the company’s most advanced hosted DNS solutions under the new URL.
Having built the first enterprise-class DNS network with local geo-aware capabilities, Comwired Inc. serves websites that require maximum protection against DNS-based online attacks and other forms of downtime. In addition to selling directly to businesses and consumers, the company offers its hosted DNS services via resellers including web hosting companies and domain name registrars.
Daniel Kimball, Comwired Inc.’s CEO, stated, “This opportunity was the next step in solidifying our position in the DNS marketplace while also giving clients a peace of mind that they are being supported by a highly-robust, and economically practical DNS solution.”
Kimball continued, “Like many of our customers, we pride ourselves on being a technology- and service-oriented business. The DNS.com domain is a powerful asset which will help expand our online community through increased name recognition and memorability.”
This move comes as Comwired plans to bring the company’s message of safer, more reliable DNS to a wider audience. In announcing the acquisition, the company has released a new website with pricing and plans targeting the enterprise market. Hundreds of enterprise customers have been migrated to the new platform since launching the site this month.
“This acquisition is a significant investment in our industry and a major advancement in our strategic posture,” described Kimball. The move has provided a 700% increase in the online audience for the company’s DNS service.

What is DNS?
The Domain Name System (DNS) is the naming architecture or “gears” that make the Internet tick. It is often compared to a phone directory, matching easy-to-remember domain names to the IP addresses by which the Web’s computers are identified. Businesses use third-party DNS to minimize their technical overhead, take advantage of global networks, and secure against DDoS attacks that can cripple their websites.
